In a late-night press conference, chief Kevin Davis discussed his department's second fatal officer-involved shooting in two weeks.
Officers were called to a home in the 6900 block of Arbor Lane in McLean arounm. Thursday night for reports of a man in crisis, but he ran away before police arrived. Nearly two hours later, a second call came in, Davis said. This time, the caller warned that the man had returned and was throwing things, NBC4 reported.
Three officers confronted the man in the home's foyer around 8:45 p.m. He threw things at them and charged the police with an "object" in his hand, Davis said. The chief did not say what he was holding.
Two of the officers used their TASERs on the charging man "multiple times," Davis said. The third officer drew his handgun and fired several rounds into his chest.
The man fell just outside the front door, where he died of his injuries, Davis said. Officials have not released his name yet.
No officers were injured.
Fairfax County detectives will examine body camera footage to determine if the shooting was warranted. Davis said this is standard procedure.
Police will release that footage within 30 days, Davis said.
Fairfax County police shot and killed a 37-year-old man on June 30 at the Springfield mall parking lot after he pulled a gun on officers as they went to arrest him.
